Bees do not MAKE pollen!!! They collect it to store as a protein source to feed the bee larvae in the hive. They gather nectar in their honey stomach and regurgitate this into their comb and evaporate it to make honey. The public is so ignorant about honey bees and beekeeping it drives me crazy that this movie contains such BLATANT ERRORS!!! THERE ARE NO POLLEN JOCKEYS!!! THE WORKER BEES ARE ALL FEMALES!! THE MALE BEES (DRONES DO NOT HAVE STINGERS!!! ETC. ETC. ETC.

@Mel: It's his first question on hearing any interesting story about history, fantasy, or anything outside his lived experience. Our favorite "does he exist in this world" query was about "The Lord Above," who's referenced in the White Stripes' song, "Little Ghost." ("Does the Lord Above exist in this world?" is a complicated question, from many points of view!)

@Jason: Yes, indeed! Of course, why a *contemporary* lit person was at a *modernist* conference is beyond me. :-)

Too funny... I think my wife L was at the same conference. Did it start with M and rhyme with "odern Studies Association)?

Alas, no Bee Movie for the kiddies on our side. Raking leaves. Put 'em to work, I say.

it's the question "do they exist in this world" that I really love...I'd like to try to find some context this week in which to say that myself...

GAH! I can't believe I did that. It should read: eating nectar and vomiting up HONEY.

Ok, I need to pay more attention to what I'm doing...It's been that sort of weekend.

The pollen collects on the hairs outside the bees' body, and they pack it into specially modified spots on their legs.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm betting that they also didn't show how bees *really* make pollen (by drinking the nectar and vomiting it up later in the hive.)
